PLANET HULK by Greg Pak and Carlo Pagulayan
Published by Marvel Comics
Reviewed by Robert Burke Richardson Savage alien planet. Oppressed barbarian tribes. Corrupt emperor. Deadly woman warrior. Gladiators and slaves. Battle axes and hand blasters. Monsters and heroes...And the Incredible Hulk! Let the smashing commence! PLANET HULK BEGINS!!! Hulk Slash! Planet Hulk = Sword and Planet Planet Hulk is your classic sword and planet tale with one little wrinkle -- the hero whose spaceship crashes on an alien world is The Incredible Hulk. ![]() In a lead-in to the summer Civil War crossover, the Hulk has been betrayed by Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man, and other Marvel heroes and exiled to "…a lush planet. Full of vegetation and game. But no intelligent life forms." Either because the Hulk smashed up his own spaceship, or perhaps because of a more mysterious cause, the Hulk lands on a very different planet -- one where he may not be the strongest one there is!
He ends up sold into slavery, and then thrown into a Gladiator-type arena with an array of monsters and aliens. What follows is lots of smashing, punctuated by swordfights and mechanized armor. ![]() In short, this is the most fun The Incredible Hulk has been in years and, while Planet Hulk has ties to the current events refashioning the Marvel Universe, issue #1 at least (Incredible Hulk v2 #92) reads very well on its own, and does not require you to read any other books to enjoy it. ![]() Just one issue in, Planet Hulk has already begun to establish a rich mythology that includes "shadow-warriors," a complex alien political climate, and lots and lots of action... but don't take my word for it. Check out the first eleven pages from Part One here, and a three page preview of Part Two here. Robert Burke Richardson writes in the Tower City of Jengao, where he lives with a pack of wild apes and maintains an evil spellbook. and our own web comic, Catspaw, go to the Sword and Sorcery Comics Page . |
